Seasonal Lawn Care Tips for Southwest Florida

A season-by-season lawn care guide for Charlotte County — what to do in winter, spring, summer, and fall to keep your Florida yard looking its best.

Florida lawns don't follow the four-season playbook. We really have two seasons — 'growing hard' and 'sort of resting' — and the maintenance shifts a lot with each. Here's the year-round rhythm we follow with our lawn care customers across Charlotte County.

Winter (December – February) — slow it down

Grass growth slows dramatically. Switch to bi-weekly or every-3-weeks mowing. This is the perfect season for a big shrub shape-up while the plants are less active. Watch for cold snaps that yellow St. Augustine temporarily — don't panic, it comes back.

Spring (March – May) — wake it up

Growth accelerates fast, especially after the first warm rains. Return to weekly mowing by mid-April at the latest. This is prime time for the first shrub trim of the year and refreshing mulch beds. Storm season isn't here yet, so it's the easiest few weeks of the year to get the yard perfect.

Summer (June – September) — stay ahead of it

Peak growing season, peak storm season, peak everything. Weekly mowing is essential. Expect palm fronds and small branches down constantly — a quick clean-up each visit is easier than a huge pile after a storm. Read [our storm cleanup tips](/blog/storm-cleanup-tips-charlotte-county) before hurricane season starts.

Watch out for scalping — the grass is growing fast, so keep mow heights at 3.5"–4" and never take more than a third off in one cut. See [our Port Charlotte lawn care tips](/blog/lawn-care-tips-port-charlotte-homeowners) for the details.

Fall (October – November) — recover and reset

Growth slows again. Weekly can transition to bi-weekly through October, then bi-weekly for the rest of the season. Do a full shrub shape-up, edge everything crisply, and haul the summer storm debris that's been piling up in the side yard.

Year-round basics

  • Edge every mowing visit
  • Blow driveways and sidewalks after every cut
  • Trim shrubs at least twice a year
  • Never let a vacant or rental yard skip more than 2 weeks — [see our vacant property maintenance](/blog/vacant-property-maintenance-florida)
  • One crew, one schedule, all year
