The Ultimate Garage Cleanout Checklist (Get It Done in One Weekend)

Your garage was supposed to be for your car. Now it's holding three bikes nobody rides, a treadmill that became a coat rack, and twelve boxes labeled 'misc' that you haven't opened since 2017. Sound familiar?

We've done hundreds of garage cleanouts across Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, and North Port, and we've learned exactly what works. Here's the same checklist we walk customers through.

Step 1 — Pick the right weekend

Florida garages get brutal after 11 AM. Plan to start at 7 or 8 in the morning so the heavy lifting is done before lunch. Two-day plan: Saturday is sort, Sunday is haul.

Step 2 — Mark your zones with painter's tape

On the driveway or in the yard, tape off four large squares on the ground:

If you're not going to list something on Marketplace within 7 days, skip the SELL pile entirely. It just becomes another stuck pile.

Step 3 — Pull EVERYTHING out

It sounds extreme. It works. You cannot organize a garage from inside the garage — you have to see your stuff in daylight. Even if it takes two hours, this step is non-negotiable.

Step 4 — Sort fast (the 5-second rule)

Pick up an item. Five seconds. Have you used it in the last two years? Will you definitely use it in the next year? If you can't say yes confidently, it goes to DONATE or TOSS.

Sentimental items get one small KEEP box. One. Anything more and you're just moving the clutter around.

Step 5 — Handle hazardous stuff separately

Junk removal companies (including us) can't take certain items by law. Set these aside for the Charlotte County Solid Waste Resource Recovery facility on Zemel Road:

Step 6 — Stage the haul pile

Move your TOSS pile to the driveway or the front of the garage. The closer to our truck, the faster we load, the less you pay.

Step 7 — Book the haul

Call or text us a photo of the pile. We'll quote you on the spot and usually be out the same week. The whole haul typically takes us 20–45 minutes.

Step 8 — Reset the garage

Before anything goes back in, sweep, hose down the floor, and consider wall hooks for bikes/tools. Vertical storage is the only thing that keeps a garage clean long-term.

What a real garage cleanout looks like

Most full garage cleanouts we do in Charlotte County run between $300 and $525. Half-garages or 'just the back wall' jobs are usually $175–$275. Add about $50 if there's a fridge or freezer.
