Moving Day Cleanup Tips That Actually Save You Money

Movers move what's going. They don't take what's staying behind. And landlords don't refund deposits on units left full of broken IKEA furniture and half-empty paint cans. Here's how to bridge that gap on moving day.

One week before — make the 'not going' pile

Every move has stuff that doesn't make the trip: the couch the dog destroyed, the desk you've outgrown, the patio set that didn't survive last hurricane season. Walk through every room and tag those items now, not on moving day.

Take photos and text them to a junk removal company for a quote. We can usually schedule the haul for moving day itself, or the day after.

Two days before — pack the kitchen and bathroom

These two rooms take three times longer than anyone expects. Knock them out early so moving day stays focused on furniture and boxes, not silverware drawers.

The day before — separate trash from junk

Bagged trash goes to the curb. Furniture, electronics, mattresses, appliances — those are 'junk removal,' not 'trash,' and your regular trash service won't take them. Stack them together near the garage or driveway for an easy haul.

Moving day — book the haul same-day

This is the single best moving-day hack we know. While the movers load the truck with what's going, we pull up and load what's staying. Done in parallel, the place is empty and broom-clean in one shot. You hand back keys the same afternoon.

The day after — the 'one more load' run

There's always more than you thought. Curtains you forgot, the closet rod, the busted shelves in the garage. Book a short-notice 1/4 truck pickup and you're free.
