Downsizing Tips for Florida Retirees (Without Losing What Matters)
A practical, no-pressure guide for retirees downsizing in Charlotte County — what to keep, what to let go, and how to make it stress-free.

Downsizing is one of the most common reasons people call us in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. Moving from a four-bedroom into a two-bedroom condo. Selling the family home after the kids moved north. Transitioning into assisted living. Whatever the reason, it's emotional and exhausting — and it doesn't have to be.
Here's the approach we recommend after helping hundreds of Florida retirees through it.
Start with the floor plan of where you're going
Get a copy of your new home's floor plan with measurements. Hang it on the fridge. Every time you decide whether to keep a piece of furniture, ask the same question: 'Does it actually fit somewhere in the new place?' If not, it goes — no matter how much you love it.
The 'will I use this in the next year?' rule
Forget the old 'have I used it in the past year' rule. At this stage of life, look forward. Will you actually use the 12-place china set in the new condo? The treadmill? The four sets of bedsheets for the guest room you no longer have?
Photos beat objects
You don't need the souvenir from the 1987 cruise. You need a good photo of it. Take pictures of the things you're letting go — the meaning lives in the memory, not in the object.
Give the kids first dibs (with a deadline)
Make a list of meaningful items and email it to your kids and grandkids. Give them 30 days to claim what they want. After 30 days, donate or haul. No more 'I'll store this in case the kids want it later' — that's how garages stay full forever.
Donate generously
Charlotte County has incredible local nonprofits that pick up. Furniture, kitchenware, lamps, books, tools, clothing — all of it can help someone. We coordinate the donations as part of our cleanout so you don't have to make a single call.
Sell only what's truly worth it
Antiques, jewelry, fine art, certain collectibles — get those appraised first. Everything else (yes, even your nice dining set) is usually worth less than the time it takes to sell. Donate it and move on with your week.
Let us handle the rest
Once you've kept what's coming with you and tagged what the kids want, call us. We haul everything else in a single visit — furniture, appliances, garage contents, attic, shed. Most full-home downsize cleanouts run $600–$1,500 in our area.
We work on your timeline
Want to do it room-by-room over three weekends? Done. Want it gone in one day before the closing? Done. We do whatever pace makes this easier on you.
